What to Expect at Your Visit
We want every visit to feel straightforward and comfortable. Here's everything you need to know before, during, and after your ultrasound appointment.
Your Appointment, Step by Step
Scheduling
Call us directly or ask your physician's office to send a referral. We'll find a time that works for you and confirm your appointment by phone.
Arrival
Please arrive 5 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. Bring your physician's order, your insurance card, and a photo ID.
The Exam
A registered sonographer will perform your exam using a handheld transducer and ultrasound gel. Most studies take 20–60 minutes and are completely painless.
Results
Images are reviewed by a radiologist and a report is sent to your referring physician, typically within 24–72 hours. Your doctor will discuss results with you.
Preparation Instructions
Preparation varies by exam type. Follow the instructions provided by your physician or our office. Common guidelines are listed below.
Abdominal Ultrasound
Do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-12 hours before your exam. This helps ensure clear images of the gallbladder and abdominal organs.
Pelvic Ultrasound
Drink 32 oz of water 1 hour before your appointment and do not urinate. A full bladder improves image quality for pelvic studies. If the full bladder is not needed you will be able to empty it.
OB Ultrasound (First Trimester)
A full bladder is helpful for early pregnancy exams. Drink 32 oz of water 1 hour before your appointment.
Vascular / Carotid Studies
No special preparation is required. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid tight collars or neckwear for carotid studies.
General Soft Tissue / Thyroid
No preparation is needed for most soft tissue or thyroid exams. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.
